15 Bihar athletes to represent East Zone

Patna, August 22, 2010: Fifteen athletes from Bihar will represent East Zone in the 22nd National inter-zonal athletic championships to be held at Guntur from September 3, according to a Press release of the Bihar Athletic Association.

Athlets are; Ashutosh Kumar, Anjani Kumar, Kundan Kumar, Prem Prakash Gupta, Santosh Kumar Yadav, Pramila Bag, Shilpa Kumari, Sarista Mandal, Putul Sarkar, Veena Kumari, Anand Kishore, mantosh Kumar, Raushan Kumar, Shintu Kumar and Monu Kumar. Apresh Ghosh TT: Aditya Umang wins cadet boys' singles title

Patna, August 23, 2010: Aditya Umang won the cadet boys’ singles title shocking top seed Ayush Adarsh 11-6, 6-11, 11-8, 9-11 and 11-9 in the Apresh Ghosh memorial table tennis championships at the Bihar Young Men’s Institute here on Sunday.

Aditya also clinched the doubles crown when pairing with Rohan he beat the pair of Amit and Saurav 11-8, 11-6, 9-11, 9-11 and 8-11.

In the sub-junior boys’ singles, Amit Kumar, Saurav Kumar, Gouresh Nishad and Yash Anand advanced into the semi-finals. Arohi Utkarsh, Ankit Kumar, Piyush D Gandhi and Rahul Prakash entered the semi-finals of the junior boys’ singles event.

Saharsa girl Akasha is Bihar sub-jr chess champ

Patna, August 22, 2010: Saharsa girl Akasha won the 35th Bihar sub-junior chess championships title at the Moinul Haq Stadium here on Sunday. Akasha got four points at the end of fifth and final round.

In the final round match, Akasha beat Shurti Priya of Kishanganj.

Shubham of Bhagalpur took sole lead with five points after the end of fifth round play in the boys’ section.

Bihar sub-junior chess meet begins in Patna

Patna, August 20, 2010: Top seed Ravi Shankar outplayed Ishant Tarunesh in a first round boys’ section match of the 35th Bihar state sub-junior chess championship at the Moinul Haq Stadium here on Friday.

In girls’ section match, Srishti Gautam beat Isleen Kaur while Akasha outsmarted Manya Diptam.

Earlier, Arun Kumar Sinha, MLA, Patna Central, inaugurated the championship.

Sudarshi Singh shines in Apresh Ghosh TT meet

Patna, August 20, 2010: Sudarshi Singh of Litera Valley School won the cadet girls’ singles title in the Apresh Ghosh memorial table tennis tournament winning her all matches of the round-robin league at the Bihar Young Men’s Institute here on Friday.

Sourya Prabhakar was declared runner-up in the same section.

Earlier, Banarasi Prasad, former Bihar state table tennis champion inaugurated the tournament. Mukesh Roy, secretary, Bihar Table Tennis Association (BTTA) welcomed the guests.

Bihar swimming team for Sr Nationals named

Patna, August 19, 2010: Bihar Swimming Association (BSA) announced an 11-member state team for the Senior National swimming championships to be held in Jaipur from August 24 to 28.

BSA joint secretary Prabhakar Nandan said Upemdra Kumar and Shashi Bala would be the managers for men and women teams respectively. Manoj Kumar Jha would be the coach of men team while Nanda Singh would be the coach of women team, he added.

Men: Binod Kumar (50 and 100-m breaststroke), Kundan Kumar (50-m butterfly and 200-m individual medley), Dilip Kumar (400 and 200-m freestyle), Ganeshwar Manjhi (100 and 50-m backstroke), Narendra Nishad (200-m butterfly), Aman Kumar (800, 1500-m freestyle) and Mantu Yadav (200, 100, 50m freestyles).

Women: Neha Singh (50-m backstroke and 50-m butterfly), Baby Kumari (200, 100, 50-m breaststroke).

Re-examination of BCCI Level-A Coaches' to be held in Jaipur

Patna, August 18, 2010: Rajasthan Cricket Association will host the re-examinations of BCCI Level-A Coaches’ course for the students who failed to pass earlier examination, on August 30 and 31 in Jaipur, according to a press release of Bihar Cricket Association Ad-hoc Committee.

Seven coaches of the BCA that includes Ali Rashid, Raju Vals, Navin Bhushan Sharma, Rajiv Kumar, Alok Kumar, Anil Kumar Mishra and Rajesh Kumar would appear in the examinations, the release stated.

Muzaffarpur to host sub-jr basketball trials

Patna, August 18, 2010: Selection trials of the Bihar sub-junior basketball team will be held in Muzaffarpur on August 29, according to Sushil Kumar, coordinator, Basketball Association of Bihar.

Bihar would participate in the sub-junior National basketball championships to be held in Himachal Pradesh from September 24, he added.

2nd Bihar State Major Ranking TT from August 28

Patna, August 18, 2010: The second Bihar State Major ranking table tennis championships will be held in Katihar from August 28, according to Mukesh Roy, secretary, Bihar Table Tennis Association (BTTA).

Katihar District Table Tennis Association secretary JP Sharma would be the organising secretary for the meet, he added.

Patna, August 16, 2010: Abhishek Kumar Sonu of Muzaffarpur won the 39th Bihar state junior chess championship title at the Moinul Haq Stadium here. Pallavi Kumari of Bhagalpur won the women’s title.

Anil Kumble to work with SA spinners

Johannesburg, August 13, 2010: Some of South Africa's leading and up and coming spin bowlers will get a rare opportunity to spend quality time in the company of former Indian leg spinner, Anil Kumble, who will be in the country next week to take part in a coaching clinic in Johannesburg on Thursday.

Kumble will be joined by Proteas stars and fellow spinners, Paul Harris and Johan Botha, as a host of franchise and up and coming spinners receive first hand coaching from one of the best bowlers of all time.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) CEO Gerald Majola said: "Anil Kumble is a living legend, and CSA is honoured that he has accepted our invitation to come out to South Africa and work with tomorrow's stars. We will also invite some of our women cricketers, young batsmen and wicket keepers, who we believe, will benefit from the experience.

"CSA is encouraged by the progress made by our High Performance team, and we are confident that this visit is going to boost the good work being done in the spinning department."

The spinning clinic, which will also be attended by CSA's high performance spinning coaches, Shafiek Abrahams, Harry Shapiro and Paul Adams, will run alongside the second CSA Annual Conference, which will take place from 18-21 August in Sandton.

The CSA Annual Conference brings together the entire cricket family, whose task this year is to map the way forward for the next four years.

15th Dhyanchand throwball from August 27

Patna, August 12, 2010: Throwball Association of Bihar (TAB) will organise the 15th Dhyanchand throwball championships at Bankipore Girls School here from August 27, to 29.

TAB secretary Niraj Kumar Pappu said the tournament would be organized in boys and girls sections. Top three finishers of each group would be given prizes. The last date for entry is August 18.

Acharya Sudarshan Sports and Cultural Foundation formed

Patna, August 12, 2010: With an aim to promoting sports and culture, Acharya Sudarshan Sports and Cultural Foundation has been formed at Patna Central School here on Thursday.

The foundation will provide sports infrastructure and basic facilities to budding talents of Bihar in different games.

Acharya Sudarshan Ji Maharaj, who has been named patron-in-chief of the body, said the foundation had adopted throwball, tennikoit, chess, kho-kho, athletics, volleyball, basketball and swimming.

Semifinalists spotted in Patna super division football league

Patna, August 10, 2010: Patna Police moved into the semifinal of Patna Football Association (PFA) super division league beating Rainbow Football Club by a solitary second half goal at the New Police Lines ground here on Tuesday.

Jagannath Mahto scored the match-winner in the 52nd minute.
Patna Police will meet BRC in the first semifinal while Raj Milk Football Club will take on Bihar Police in the other semifinal.

Dilip, Neha rule the pool in Bihar swimming


Patna, Auhust 7, 2010: Dilip Kumar Gauda and Neha Singh cornered glory winning the individual championship titles in men and women sections respectively at the 33rd Bihar state senior swimming championship at the Bankipore Club swimming pool here on Saturday.

About 129 swimmers from various districts of Bihar participated in the championships.
Earlier, Major Manjeet Singh Sarla inaugurated the championship. Dr Sanjeev Kumar, director, Magadh Hospital and Nikesh Prasad, secretary, Bankipore Club, jointly distributed the prizes. Ram Bilas Pandey, secretary, Bihar swimming Association, welcomed the guests.

Indian women’s team in final

Patna, August 9, 2010: In a remarkable achievement, the Indian women’s team, comprising Dola Banerjee, L. Bombayla Devi and Deepika Kumari, made it to the final of the World Cup archery Stage III at Ogden (the US) on August 6, 2010. India will take on World Champion Korea in the summit clash.

According to information received here, sixth ranked India outplayed Georgia 220-201 points in the first round, ousted Spain in the quarterfinals at 218-182 and overcame second ranked China in the semifinals at 215-206.

Interestingly, Deepika, the youngest member of the team, won the world cadet recurve individual gold medal last year at the same venue.

The men’s recurve team, delivering medals of all hues since 2008, missed out this time losing to Italy in the quarterfinals. Tarundeep Rai, Mangal Singh and Kapil lost at 216-219 after defeating Colombia at 215-213 in the first round in a 16-team field.

Indian archers face early exit

Patna, August 8, 2010: Indian archers faced an early elimination in the individual round of the Archery World Cup State III at Ogden (US) on August 5, 2010.

According to information received here, only two women archers, Dola Banerjee and Deepika Kumari managed to reach the pre-quarterfinals before bowing out. Dola fell to Shanshan Zhu of China while Deepika lost to Joo Hyun-Jung of Korea.

Rupesh Ranjan starts campaign in style

Patna, August 7, 2010: Rupesh Ranjan beat Himanshu Harsh to collect full points in the opening round match of the Ganauri Das memorial open chess tournament at the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) hall here on Friday.

Manishankar Kumar and Manya Diptam also won their respective first round matches.

Earlier, Mohan Yadav, deputy general manager of RBI, Patna, inaugurated the tournament. RBI Employees’ Sports and Recreation Club secretary Rajeev Ranjan welcomed the guests.

Amitabh Bachchan is the brand ambassador of Champions League T20 cricket

Mumbai, August 6, 2010: ESPN STAR Sports, the official broadcaster and commercial partner of Airtel Champions League Twenty20, has signed Bollywood legend and cultural icon, Amitabh Bachchan, as the brand ambassador for this edition of the tournament.

Saina Nehwal gets Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award

Patna, August 5, 2010: The Union Government on Thursday announced the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Arjuna Awards, Dhyan Chand Awards, Dronacharya Awards and Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar for the year 2010, in New Delhi.


A large number of nominations were received for these awards this year, which were considered by two select panels of eminent sportspersons and sports administrators; one headed by P.T. Usha ( for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Arjuna Awards, Dhyan Chand Awards and Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar) and other by Ashok Kumar (for Dronacharya Awards).

Based on the recommendations of the committees and after due scrutiny, the government has approved to confer awards upon the following sportspersons, coaches and organizations.

Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award - 2010: Saina Nehwal (badminton).

Khel Evam Yuva Vibhag , Government of Madhya Pradesh (Establishment and Management of Sports Academies of Excellence)4. Services Sports Control Board ( Employment of sportsperson and sports welfare measures).


National Sports Awards are given every year to recognize and reward the excellence in sports. Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award is given for spectacular performance in the year under consideration; Arjunan Award is given for consistently outstanding performance for three consecutive years preceding the year of award; Dhyan Chand Award for lift time contribution to sports development; and Dronacharya Award for producing medal winners at prestigious international sports events in past three years.

Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award is given to only one sportsperson in a year. Arjuna Award is given to not more than 15, Dhyan Chand Award to not more than 3 and Dronacharya Award to not more than 5 persons.

With a view to recognizing the contribution made to sports development by entities other than sportspersons and coaches, Government has instituted last year, a new award entitled Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar, which has four categories, namely, community sports development, promotion of sports academies of excellence, support to elite sportspersons and employment to sportspersons.

Apart from a medal and a citation, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awardee will receive a cash prize of Rs.7.5 lakh. Arjuna, Dhyan Chand and Dronacharya Awardees will receive statuettes, citations and cash prize of Rs.5 lakh each. The recipients of Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar will receive trophy and citation.

The awardees will receive their awards from the President of India at a specially organized function at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on August 29, 2010.

Now, Bihar Swimming from August 7

Patna, August 4, 2010: The 33rd senior state swimming championship will be held at the Bankipore Club swimming pool on August 7, according to Bihar Swimming Association secretary Ram Bilas Pandey.


He said Manjeet Singh Sarla would inaugurate the championship. Bihar teams for the senior National swimming championships to be held in Jaipur from August 24 would be selected on the basis of performance in the meet, he said.

Grand treble for Naman, Rinki wins women's singles crown


Patna, August 3, 2010: Naman Kumar of Patna was the star on the concluding day of the first Bihar State Major Ranking table tennis tournament at the Bihar Young Men’s Institute here on Tuesday.

Naman earned a grand treble winning the junior boys singles, youth singles and men’s singles titles to assert his supremacy. In the coveted men’s singles final, Aman beat Any Raj 11-8, 11-9, 11-7 and 11-9 to annex crown.

Aman captured the youth singles title defeating Rahul Kumar 11-8, 11-7, 9-11, 11-8 and 11-5 while in junior boys’ singles final, Aman chalked out 11-8, 11-7, 11-8, 11-9 victory over Piyush D Gandhi.

Rinki Ghosh of Patna clinched the women’s singles crown beating Saiqua Parween (Bhojpur) 8-11, 11-5, 11-6, 11-5 and 11-4. Priya Kumari won the youth girls’ singles title beating Suprna Joshi 6-11, 11-7, 11-5 and 11-9.

Former Bihar Ranji Trophy team skipper Avinash Kumar, who was the chief guest in the prize-distribution function, gave away the prizes. Dilip Kumar Gandhi, organising secretary welcomed the guests. Mukesh Roy, secretary, Bihar Table Tennis Association (BTTA) proposed a vote of thanks.
BTTA also felicitated Avinash Kumar on the occasion.

Rinki Ghosh and Saiqua Parween enter final

Patna, August 2, 2010: Rinki Ghosh and Saiqua Parween stormed into the women singles final of the Bihar State First Major Ranking table tennis tournament at the Bihar Young Men’s Institute here on Monday.

In the first semi-final, Saiqua Parween fought hard to down Priya Kumari 11-4, 11-8, 8-11, 8-11, 11-7 while Rinki Ghosh outplayed Chumki Mandal 11-8, 11-9, 9-11, 11-6 to set up title clash.

In sub-junior boys’ singles final, Amit Kumar outpaced Saurabh Kumar 11-7, 11-3, 7-11 and 11-8. Aditya Umang won the cadet boys’ singles title beating Rohan Kumar 11-8, 11-9, 11-9.
In the youth girls’ singles, Priya Kumari will take Suparna Joshi in the final.

Lekh Raj, Somnath Roy, Ankit Kumar, Naman Kumar, Francis, Ankit Tarve, and Piyush D Gandhi moved into the men’s singles quarterfinals winning their respective matches.

Ganauri Das Open chess meet from August 6

Patna, August 2, 2010: Ganauri Das Open chess tournament will be held at Reserve Bank Employees Sports and Recreation Club Hall here from August 6, according to club secretary Rajeev Ranjan.


The championship will be played on nine-round Swiss league basis in U-10, U-13, U-15 and U-19 age groups.

Madhepura girl Riyansi bags a grand double

Patna, August 1, 2010: Feisty Madhepura girl Riyansi Gupta cornered glory on the Day Two of the Bihar State Major Ranking table tennis tournament at the Bihar Young Men’s Institute here on Sunday winning the sub-junior and cadet girls’ singles titles in a remarkable style.

Riyansi took Riya Kumari (Motihari) straight 11-8, 13-11, 11-6 to win sub-junior girls crown while in cadet girls’ final, Riyansi fought it out to beat her teammate Riya Kumar 11-6, 5-11, 11-4, 6-11 and 11-7 for the crown.

Four Patna players Aditya Umang, Ayush Anand, Rohan Kumar and Sagar Kumar entered the cadet boys’ singles semifinals.

In sub-junior boys singles, line up for the pre-quarterfinals have been decided as Amit Kumar, Prashant Roshan, Priyanshu, Saurabh, Aniket, Deepak Kumar, Gagan, Saurabh Kumar, Rishutosh, Aniket Kumar, Yash Anand, Aman Tiwari, Aditya Umang, Tushar Kanti and Rohit Kumar won their respective second round matches.

Bihar State women chess from August 12

Patna, July 31, 2010: The 34th Bihar state women and 38th junior state chess championship will be held in Patna from August 12, according to All Bihar Chess Association secretary Arvind Kumar Sinha.

Top four finishers of the state women championships would represent Bihar in the National ‘B’ championship to be held in Guwahati from August 20, he added.
